Music is an integral element of Highgate Primary School with all students from Year 1 to Year 6 attending weekly lessons ran by Ms Jackson. Lessons in the lower years are Kodaly inspired and include singing, playing a range of instruments, composition, listening, responding and much more. In the upper years, students also start to learn Ukulele and we include more music technology in our curriculum.

We currently have two school bands and a choir. Selected year 5 & 6 students are also given the opportunity to participate in the School of Instrumental Music programs of classical guitar and brass. Further information about those lessons can be foundĀ here.

In 2017, Ms Jackson introduced drama as another arts subject for Year 1 to Year 6. This gives students a more well-rounded arts education and will help build confidence and stagecraft skills which can be applied in all aspects of the children’s daily lives. In drama classes, we look at character development, improvisation/theatre sports, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and work on our biennial musical. Our next musical will be performed in 2019 with auditions held at the end of 2018.
